WBGT on the fields, the heat schedule
SBV uses the WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) to determine whether practices are canceled, shortened or held as scheduled. The WBGT is a measure of heat stress in direct sunlight, which takes into account: temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover.
We take the WBGT reading on the field itself, in areas with no shade.
We compare the WBGT reading with the reading with our partners at the City of Overland Park weather department, and the readings they take using their advanced measurement tools. The same ones used for reporting on television.
We do NOT use the Weather.com or Apple Weather app. Neither of these are accurate on-field like WetBulb technology.
If the forecast calls for unusually warm temperatures the WetBulb Globe Temperature will be measured on the fields one hour before each practice. The following guidelines will be used to determine if practice will be canceled, shortened or held as scheduled.
Sprocket Sports and this webpage will be updated 1 hour before each practice if there is to be a change of the practice schedule.
We make the decision by 3:30 or 4:30pm.
